A Conservation Success Story
We are proud that the wider Kaikōura region has achieved Dark Sky Sanctuary status. This designation was instrumental in protecting the endangered Hutton’s Shearwater—a conservation win we cherish. With only two natural colonies remaining in the world, one of which is located right here on our station, preserving the darkness is crucial to protecting this unique birdlife. When you look up, you are contributing to a vital conservation effort!
Visit the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust website to learn more about the trust and conservation goals.
