Fly into Christchurch International or Blenheim Domestic airports for easy road or helicopter connections. Kaikōura is approximately 2.5 hours from either Christchurch or Picton, and 2 hours from Blenheim, via State Highway 1. For those seeking a change of pace, Route 70 (the Inland Road) offers a beautiful scenic alternative if you are coming from Christchurch.

Traveling from the North Island? The Picton Ferry across the Cook Strait provides a seamless connection to rental cars, the Coastal Pacific train, regional flights, and bus services.

Travelling from the North

From Picton/Blenheim, follow State Highway 1 south through the Marlborough wine region toward Kaikōura. The drive is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. After passing through the Clarence and Kēkerengū areas, look for the Hapuku River Bridge. Just before crossing the bridge, turn right onto Puhi Puhi Road. If you reach Kaikōura township, you have missed the turnoff and gone about 12km too far! We recommend stopping in Blenheim or Ward to ensure you have a full tank of fuel.

Travelling from the South

From Christchurch, follow State Highway 1 north toward Kaikōura. We recommend stopping in Kaikōura for fuel and supplies, as there are no services once you head inland. Drive north out of Kaikōura for approximately 10minutes / 12km and turn left onto Puhi Puhi Road (just after the Hapuku River Bridge).

Once you are on Puhi Puhi Road

As you hit the valley, the road will become unsealed (gravel). There is no cell reception once you leave the main highway. We are located at the very end of the Puhi Puhi Road which is 18km long. You will encounter four shallow fords on the way to the station; while usually passable for most vehicles, we recommend a vehicle with reasonable clearance. Continue to the end of the public road (approx. 30 minutes) where you will reach the top Puhi Peaks Station gate. Please come through the top gate and drive approx. 1km down to our station.

Road Conditions

The Puhi Puhi Road is an unsealed gravel road and is unmarked. Conditions can vary significantly throughout the year due to weather and seasonal changes.

  • The Fords: There are 4 fords to cross on the way to the station.
  • Vehicle Recommendation: A 4WD is recommended, or a vehicle with good chassis clearance. Depending on current weather and road conditions, a 2WD vehicle will be sufficient, but please check with us before your journey if you have any concerns.
  • Drive to the Conditions: Please keep your speed low and stay to the left. Be aware of potential rockfall and blind corners.
  • A Working Valley: This is a shared road. You will pass a DOC campsite part way up the valley; please be mindful of hikers, campers, and increased traffic in this area.
  • Share the Road: Beyond the campsite, the road remains a thoroughfare for residents and farm vehicles. Please drive slowly, stay to the left on blind corners, and watch for wandering livestock or active wild deer.
  • Narrow Sections: In some places, the road may be narrow. Always be prepared to pull over to a wider spot to let oncoming traffic pass safely.
Transport Options

Self Drive

You are welcome to bring your vehicle; however, we recommend a 4WD-capable vehicle, as you will cross four small fords along Puhi Puhi Valley Road. The road conditions require good suspension and reasonable chassis clearance.
