45mins – The Puhi Puhi Road is a 10min drive north of Kaikoura, and then a 35-minute drive on unsealed road, to Puhi Peaks Station. There are several small ford crossings, and we do recommend 4WD vehicle with higher suspension. 2WD is fine much of the time, unless we have had heavy rainfall/snow. Please feel free to contact us to check the current road condition.

Yes – we have options to cater for individuals and groups. We offer a special price for accommodations booked with hunts. Please note – our facility is self catering, so you would need to bring all food/drink supplies with you. Tea/coffee provided, along with cooking facilities.
We predominantly offer Red Deer – hinds/stags and Arapawa sheep – ewes/rams. Wild goats, pigs may be shot if you come across them on a hunt, as can rabbits. Chamois have been seen higher on the station – please enquire if you are interested in this option.
We offer hunts all year round, but the best time depends on the species. If you are specifically looking for a stag, then during the Rut/Roar is the best time – late March – late April. Arapawa sheep, goats and pigs can be hunted all year round and provide some great hunting adventures!
Guided Hunts – no. You will be under the supervision of the licenced hunt guide.
Unguided Hunts – Yes. At least one person in your party must have a valid current firearms licence and the group abide by firearms safety rules. The licence holder is responsible for the firearm carried by the group.
Guided Hunts – no – if you are not bringing your own firearm, you may hire one, which will be under the supervision of the hunt guide throughout the hunt. This cost is $100 which includes 3 rounds of ammo. Extra rounds $10 each.
Unguided Hunts – yes – preferably suppressed. We do not hire out firearms for unguided hunts.
Basic field dressing is included in the price of your guided hunt. This involves gutting the animal after it has been shot, which allows the carcass to cool more efficiently, as well as making the animal lighter to carry. Skinning can also be carried out if required.
We do not process or offer butchery services of the animal/s for you but can help assist you break down the carcass if time allows. We can highly recommend our local home kill butcher, or you may wish to contact your own local butcher to enquire as to their services.
Guided Hunts – We cater for all levels of fitness! Many people come for a hunt who have health issues and fitness related injuries – and we can cater a guided hunt to suit. We also use LUVs to access areas of the station to reduce walking distances. If climbing mountains is your thing – we can cater to that too!
Unguided Hunts – Our Mt Alexander block is quite steep, open terrain, with tussock, matagouri and pockets of native bush, requiring a very good level of fitness and hunting ability. It’s a great place to improve your hunting and stalking skills.
We offer half day and full day hunts, as well as multi day options.
The early bird catches the worm! Our hunts generally start between 6.30am-7am. Depending on where you are travelling from, we do recommend staying in our accommodation the night before your hunt, due to both the early start time and drive time to the station.
Yes! We have a minimum age of 12 to be able to partake in shooting. Younger children can accompany you on a hunt, watch the process and help, but must always be under your control.
No, we do not allow spotlighting/after dark shooting.
No – we do not allow guest hunters to bring dogs to the station.
Yes – there is a powered meat chiller – this is available at a cost of $30 per day.
We also have an unpowered meat shed which can be used free of charge.
We do not, but we can recommend taxidermists in the region.
Please bring old sheets/duvet covers to wrap animal carcasses in as well as ice/chiller packs and chilly bins. We have a freezer you can store ice packs in.
